The success of any town or city often depends upon not only the actions of its politicians and elected officials but on the actions of its citizens as well. LOCAC – The Los Osos Community Advisory Committee – is an organization made up of local citizens who are concerned about many different aspects and issues that affect the city and its residents – everything from land use and parks and recreation to things like parking and transportation.

As a purely volunteer organization made up of non politicians LOCAC does not have an official political powers but theirs is a voice that is heard, and respected, by local government. LOCAC serves to act as the voice of the citizens of Los Osos in matters that affect the Morro Bay.

LOCAC meets every fourth Thursday of the month at the Southbay Community Center. All of the meetings are open to the public and comment is always welcomed and invited. The LOCAC board is made up of two elected officials from each of the four residential sections of Los Osos and each elected representative is called upon to serve a four year unpaid term.

LOCAC now also consists of several different subcommittees – each devoted to a different issue that impacts the area:

Land Use Committee
The Land Use Committee meets every second Thursday of the month at the South Bay Community Center. At each meeting members discuss and review many different issues related to land use in the area. For more information members can email Mimi Whitney at costaloilartists@aol.com

Parks and Recreation Committee
This group meets every first Tuesday of the month at a member’s home. For more information residents can email Paul Malykont at mepps@charter.net

Transportation and Circulation Committee
Devoted to any and all issues related to transportation in the Los Osos area this committee meets every first Thursday of the month at the South Bay Community Center. For more information residents can email Fred Dellagatta at fdellagatta@yahoo.com

LOCAC and its subcommittees does not receive federal or state government funding with the exception of a small grant from the District 2 Supervisor that pays for hall rentals for meetings and other small incidentals. LOCAC can accept personal donations from the public of up to $50 and all monies raised are used to further community outreach. For more information about donating or becoming involved in other ways residents can email queries to locac@locac.us.

All over the State of California the landscape is changing and unfortunately that is not always a good thing. Urban sprawl and industry are eating away at the state’s natural beauty and destroying the habitats of dozens of species of animals, birds, marine life, plants and trees.

One of the organizations that works hard to preserve some of the most beautiful land in San Luis Obispo County is the Small Wilderness Area Preservation group – better known as S.W.A.P. Founded in 1971 its mission is to protect and preserve small but significant natural areas from the ravages of urbanization.

S.W.A.P’s biggest project is the preservation of the Elfin Forest in Los Osos. Named after the stunted California Live Oaks that are found in abundance in the area, the Elfin Forest is a 90 acre site that is home to over 200 species of plant and over 100 species of wildlife.

In addition to providing the leadership and personnel needed to maintain the forest S.W.A.P also works to encourage public participation in the stewardship of Elfin Forest. The group organizes regular gatherings of “Weed Warriors” – volunteers who donate their time to remove invasive plants and prevent soil erosion amongst other things.

S.W.A.P also sponsor Third Saturday Nature Walks through the forest that are held once a month. Each month the walk has a different theme and focuses on a specific area or feature of the forest depending upon the time of year.
You can find out about the upcoming month’s walk here.

Those who lead S.W.A.P, which has no paid employees believe that in the long term only the community members of Los Osos can ensure that the Elfin Forest and its inhabitants survive. In addition to the monthly walks that are open to all S.W.A.P also provides educational programs and excursions to the area’s children.

To learn more about how the general public can help the S.W.A.P mission succeed contact Yolanda Waddell or Pat Akey.

In many towns across the US the local Chamber of Commerce is an important and driving force in the community, especially when it comes to local business matters. Los Osos is no exception and the Los Osos Chamber of Commerce. according to its mission statement the Los Osos Chamber, which also serves the Baywood Park area strives to “create, maintain and improve

an environment which is conducive to the establishment and successful operation of business enterprises in our community.” What some may wonder though is just how they do that. Here are just a few of the ways:

Newsletters: The Los Osos Chamber of Commerce Newsletter is released on a monthly basis and member companies not only have the chance to advertise in it but also to share important company news with the rest of the local business community and the community at large.

Mixer Events: Networking is a huge part of the success of any local business community. The Los Osos Chamber of Commerce hosts a monthly mixer that allows members to interact with one another and to potentially form new alliances and gain new exposure. The Chamber also hosts business seminars that offer companies additional promotional opportunities.

Chamber Directory: The Chamber maintains a directory of its membership that is openly accessible to the public, which allows them to discover more about the products and services available in their own community. To access the directory you can click here.

Community Events: The Los Osos Chamber of Commerce hosts a number of community special events throughout the year. These events include a Business Showcase, a $50,000 Hole in One Golf Tournament, a Community Auction, an Oktoberfest Celebration and even a Christmas Parade. All of these events offer businesses a huge promotional opportunity through sponsorship as well as the chance for their officers to interact with the public directly.

For more information visit the Chamber of Commerce website
