To fully enjoy the magnificent
Seven Mile Drive, plan to spend the better part of a day on this
venture. As you enter Los Osos, you might want to stop at the
Chamber Office & Visitors Center, and inquire about places to
pick up snacks or a picnic lunch.
From Los Osos Valley Road and South
Bay Boulevard, head west through the town of Los Osos for 1 1/2
miles. You'll pass the famous old Schoolhouse on the right,
nestled in the trees of Los Osos Community Park, as you head
toward Montaņa de Oro State Park.
Once
Los Osos Valley Road turns into Pecho Road (near the edge of the
community), you'll begin one of the most beautiful drives you'll
ever experience; miles of unpopulated rocky shores and sandy
beaches and 7,828 acres of hills, and eucalyptus groves. Stop at
one of the many turnoffs, and simply marvel at the wonder of the
crystal clear ocean vista!
The winding road rises with the
rolling, brush-covered foothills, and affords dramatic views of
Morro Bay and its surroundings. From unpaved turnouts, the vista
encompasses the bay and its estuary, the community of Morro Bay,
and the long finger-like sandspit that points northward to Morro
Rock.
As
you continue your leisurely drive, you will finally reach
Spooner's Cove, as isolated and romantic as the name implies.
You'll soon know why numerous movie scenes (including the cave in
Pete's Dragon) were filmed in the area. Walk the cliffs and
beaches, sunbathe, fish or hike through the fields of wildflowers,
picnic, and watch for whales.
As
the day comes to a close and you head back, turn left on Pine
Street and drive out to Baywood Park. The pristine village
setting, complete with a pier jutting into the bay, will afford
you a great place to watch the bird life, or simply see the
sunset.
.
.
Make a memorable finish to your day by dining in one of the great
restaurants along the waterfront in Los Osos/Baywood Park.
